British Polythene Industries (BPI) plc has shown its support for the important work of the RNLI. The business - which ranks not only as Europe’s largest manufacturer of polythene films bags and sacks but also as Europe’s largest waste polythene recycler - has donated a Plaswood bench to the charity’s new Exmouth lifeboat station.
Plaswood is an innovative alternative to wood and is made from 100% recycled polythene. As such, Plaswood products help to divert waste from landfill and to keep reusable polythene in circulation. Their use of recycled rather than virgin plastics also plays an important part in reducing the consumption of the Earth’s dwindling oil resources and provides marked reductions in carbon and other emissions created during the production process.
Further benefits to Plaswood include all of the aesthetics of wood but without many of the associated maintenance requirements such as the need for regular painting or rot proofing. Plaswood also offers enormous flexibility and can be used to create everything from benches and decking to fences, gates and pontoons.
The newly donated bench enjoys a prime position at the RNLI lifeboat station, overlooking the Exe estuary. Its donation coincides with the official completion of the state-of-the-art station, which was built to allow the lifeboats 24/7 access to the sea.
The new lifeboat station offers a number of advantages over its predecessor, including the ability to house both a Mersey Class all-weather Lifeboat and a D-Class inshore lifeboat under one roof. Previously the two vessels were split over dual sites making operational co-ordination, training and communication more difficult. Both lifeboats can now also be launched down a purpose-built ramp, meaning faster response times.
The money required to undertake the station’s construction came entirely from public donations and the fundraising efforts of RNLI supporters.
Commenting on BPI’s decision to donate the Plaswood bench, Louise Aplin, Marketing Manager at the company, said: “BPI is delighted to be supporting the new Exmouth lifeboat station. Every year, its volunteer crews do an invaluable job in keeping the local waterways and beaches safe, giving up significant amounts of their free time, often at short notice, to help others in distress. Donating the bench was the very least we could do and we hope the entire team and the station’s visitors get many years of happy use from it.”
The new Exmouth Lifeboat station was officially unveiled by RNLI Chief Executive Paul Boissier in an opening ceremony on 4th September in front of over 600 guests.
